I don't know what to write?
Just sitting here looking at a blank screen and thinking, what to write about this week.
Yes I have ideas, we all have ideas but I just can't decide what to write about. What is my approach, my angle and from whose point of view will I tell this story.
This is what I think writers block really is. It's not that we don't have a thought but the idea isn't convincing enough to warrant siting down and taping it out through the keys.
It really doesn't matter if it's an article, a book or a screenplay, writers block is just a horrible thing.
So how do we fix it?
There are plenty of lists out there and on the list is a list, it's always nice to know where the story will end when you start to write but this is not always the case.
I'm going to quote one of my art teachers, when I was sitting there with a blank sheet paper in front of me and I didn't know what to draw. I'm not a good drawer but I do like to try it is relaxing and really not relaxing at the same time.
"Draw and inspiration will come"
Just draw a line and then draw another, you can always erase or redraw or draw over, and writing is the same.
You don't sit there with a quill and put pen to paper, I would guess that there are very few people out there who use a typewriter. These days its all digital and changing your script or book can happen really easy and you can automate a function like replacing a word with another. Which is great if you are changing a location or character name.
I start with a sentence that turns into a paragraph then a prose story and then I expand out the paragraphs and a movie script is on the way and I also have a short book as well and you can collect them and then compile a larger book etc.
Start writing and inspiration will come. You aren't locked into an idea until you take money from a producer or start to get your film crew together.
So just write and create, it doesn't matter how many ideas you don't use, all creatives have a drawer or folder on their computer that is full of old ideas that we visit from time to time. You don't have to use a good idea straight away and you never know a weak story idea may be a great character arch or small story line that goes over a scene or two.
Procrastination or looking down on yourself or your abilities will get you nowhere in life, just start doing it and you will get better. That is just how it works and that is the same for everyone.
Keep on creating you good people and we can't wait until we watch your next movie :-)
